On July 11, 2024, we hosted a kickoff meeting with the 23/54 Advisory Board, a group tasked with guiding the work of the 23/54 project team. The Advisory Board consists of descendants of families who signed onto the 1947 Corbin et al v County School Board of Pulaski County lawsuit, Calfee Center Board members, andrepresentatives from Christiansburg Institute Alumni Association, Galax’s Rosenwald Revamped, and the Wytheville Training School. A significant topic of conversation at this meeting was defining what success in this project looks like. Is success ultimately honoring the people who risked everything to fight for better educational opportunities for Black children in Pulaski? Or is success about inspiring young people today to stand up against injustice in the present and future?
